I have limited direct information on the Swedish ancestors (Anna Charlotta Carlsdotter and Charles August Isackson). Although they had 10 children (Seven girls and three boys born between 1890 and 1912 over a period of 22 years), any pictures, documents, stories, letters are just rare. Tracking down Isackson cousins is challenging.
Luckily I scanned my Grandma Edna's album years ago, or I wouldn't have one picture. Sadly I wasn't savvy enough to index the photos and document what was on the back of the picture!
The following information on Charles and Anna is just a basic documentation after searching ancestry and available common records.
The majority of the ancestors from Charles August Isackson and Anna Charlotta Carlsdotter are from the province of Småland in Southern Sweden.
For now, my research has taken me to the late 1790’s and all of the ancestors of Anna Charlotta and Charles August are from the southern Swedish province of Småland. For now, that's as far as I can go.
What do Pippi Longstocking, candy canes and Ikea have in common with our ancestors? They are all from Småland. Not kidding!
Småland has thousands of lakes, dense old-growth forests, red cottages, green meadows, 200 kilometers of coastline aaahhhhh, no wonder the Isackson siblings (three boys and one girl) set their sites for the new State of Washington (1889). *Noted that when Johanna Mathilda and brother Albert immigrated to USA, it was Washington Territory.
Four of ten Isackson children left Småland Sweden, never to return. According to "Sweden Emigrants Registered in Church Books 1783-1991" older siblings, Johanna Mathilda immigrated to Denmark in 1870. The 1910 census lists Johanna and Albert immigrated to Amerika in1883.
Younger brothers Isak Gustaf and Charles August immigrated in 1888 and 1890.
I did not locate a "Sweden Emigrants Registered in Church Books 1783-1991" for Johanna and her immigration to "Amerika." Curious what she did in Denmark for 13 years.
Immigration Dates
Johanna Mathilda Isackson 1883
Albert Isackson 1883
Isak Gustaf 1888
Charles August 1890
There seems to be a variance with immigration dates regarding when Anna Charlotta immigrated to America, with her young daughter "Axie" Edith August. Census records from 1900-1930 list varying immigration dates. The dates on the “Sweden Emigrants Registered in Church Books 1783-1991.” Anna departed Sweden 18 April 1894. Which adds up with a birth date for the next Isackson child, Henry Carl in March of 1895.

Sorting through all the names of the provinces, counties, municipalities, cities and parishes, is quite a challenge for a non-Swedish speaker! Through 300 years, some municipalities have been incorporated and are now part of a new city. Some records that I accepted are just the county and province. Some hints include, the parish, municipality, city, and even in one example, a location where an ancient castle was known to be but currently is a field of grass.
Sometimes Sweden is referred to a Suede as in the birth and death location of Susanna Andersdotter (b.1797 d. 1861). Apparently, Suede is a French slang term for Sweden.
The names are foreign (haha Swedish) to me so putting everything together is difficult.
For now, and as far as my research, I’m settling with all ancestors of Anna Charlotta and Charles August Isackson going back to the late 1790’s are from the southern Swedish province of Småland.
Charlotta, a name of German and Scandinavian origin, meaning “free woman” and is the feminine form of Charles. It has roots in the Old High German name Karl, which translates to “free man.” Charlotta is a variant of the more common name Charlotte.
Charlotta has been used five times from 1850-1979, on the Swedish (Isackson/Carlson) family line.
The Swede’s brought the name Charlotta with them from Sweden when Anna Charlotta arrived in America in 1895.
~ Anna Charlotta (b.1869 d. 1960) had an older sister, Hilma Charlotta who died in infancy (d.1868). Anna was born a year later and was given the middle name of Charlotta.
~ Charles August had an older sister, Hedvig Charlotta Isaksdotter (b. 1850).
~ Anna Charlotta’s daughter, Edith August Isackson named her daughter Evelyn Charlotte (Magnuson) (b.1923).
~ Anna Charlotta’s granddaughter, Kay Luanne Sikes, named her daughter Charlotte Anne (b.1979).
Noteworthy is use of the masculine and feminine use of the names, Charles, Karl/Carl, and Charlotta, in combination with the surname Carlson/Carlsdotter/Karlsson.
~ What ships did all of the Isackson siblings sail on?
~ Where were the ports and what were the travel arrangements to Washington Territory/State?
~ What brought Johanna Mathilda and Albert to Washington Territory? Were there other family members who left Sweden? Maybe an Aunt or Uncle?
~ Verify if any of Anna Charlott(a)’s siblings ever left Sweden.
~ What did Johanna Mathilda do in Denmark (according to the Sweden Emigrants Registered in Church Books 1783-1991.). Traveled single as a maid.
~ Why Anna and young daughter travel under her maiden name? Why is Axie used as a first name for Edith August?
